7 Foods to Improve Cholesterol

The best meal for anyone worried about their cholesterol is a meal low in saturated fat and abundant in fruits and vegetables. Although there are no magic bullets beyond that healthy prescription, certain foods have been shown to give cholesterol levels an extra nudge in the right direction. Weave some of these whole foods, all pinpointed by research as cholesterol-friendly, into your daily diet.

Alcohol

Drinking a glass of wine with dinner—any alcoholic beverage, in fact—has been shown to raise good-cholesterol levels and lower the risk of a heart attack. (Excessive drinking, however, raises heart-disease danger.)

Almonds

Substances in almond skins help prevent LDL “bad” cholesterol from being oxidized, a process that can otherwise damage the lining of blood vessels and increase cardiovascular risk.
Sprinkle almonds on cereals and salads, nibble on a handful for an afternoon snack.

Avocados

The monounsaturated fats in avocados have been found to lower “bad” LDLs and raise “good” HDLs, especially in people with mildly elevated cholesterol.
Slice avocados into sandwiches and salads or mash with garlic, lemon juice and salsa for a terrific guacamole.

Barley

When volunteers in a USDA study added barley to the standard American Heart Association diet, LDL “bad” cholesterol levels fell more than twice as far.
Barley makes a great substitute for rice, adds depth to soups and is terrific combined with dried fruits, nuts and a little oil and vinegar for a hearty salad.

Beans & Lentils

From a recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, LDL “bad” cholesterol levels fell almost twice as far in those volunteers on a low-fat diet who added beans and lentils (along with more whole grains and vegetables) to the menu.
Experiment with beans in soups, salads, and dips.

Blueberries contain a powerful antioxidant called pterostilbene that may help lower LDL cholesterol.
Toss a cup of blueberries together with a half-cup of orange juice and vanilla-flavored yogurt into the blender for a healthy breakfast drink. Sprinkle fresh blueberries on cereals and eat them by the handfuls for snacks.

Oats

When women in a University of Toronto study added oat bran to an already heart-healthy diet, HDL-cholesterol levels—the beneficial kind—climbed more than 11 percent.
Consider a daily bowl of oat bran hot cereal or old-fashioned oatmeal for breakfast. Oat bran muffins can also pack a tasty dose into your day.

Dynamic Duos: 14 Food Combos That Can Improve Your Life

Green Tea + Lemon = A Healthier Heart

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/1-green-tea-and-lemons.jpg

Green tea has been linked to a reduced risk of heart attacks, thanks to catechins, the brew’s powerful antioxidants. But studies show only about 20 percent of these healthful compounds are available for our bodies to absorb. The good news: Recently, when scientists added lemon juice to green tea, the availability of health-enhancing catechins skyrocketed to a whopping 80 percent.

Stay-Well Strategy: After brewing yourself a cup of green tea, squeeze in the juice of one whole lemon (you can also use an orange, lime or grapefruit, all runners-up in the study). Don’t want to DIY? Look for bottled green teas that list “ascorbic acid” (also known as vitamin C) among their ingredients. Scientists say the vitamin C in citrus fruits can also improve catechin absorption.

Broccoli + Tomatoes = Cancer Control

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/2-brocolli-and-tomatoes.jpg

Broccoli and tomatoes are both cancer-fighting all-stars, but research reveals eating them together may offer even more protection. In a recent study, scientists found consuming tomato and broccoli at the same time was more effective at slowing the growth of cancerous prostate tumors than eating either vegetable alone.

Red Bell Peppers + Black Beans = Improved Immunity

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/3-bell-peppers-and-black-beans.jpg

Eating more meatless meals lately to do your heart (and the planet) a favor? You’ll absorb more immune-boosting plant iron by adding in some red bell peppers. That’s because the iron in picks like beans exists in a form called non-heme iron that’s harder for your body to absorb than the iron found in red meat (heme iron). But, adding a dose of vitamin C-rich produce like red peppers converts the iron into a type that’s easier for the body to use, explains registered dietitian Heidi McIndoo, author of the book, When to Eat What.
Stay-Well Strategy: In one study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women absorbed nearly three times more iron from their meal by adding just 63 milligrams of vitamin C. This amount translates into about a half cup of chopped red bell peppers. To tap into their healing powers, toss these health-enhancing peppers into your next pot of chili.

Eggs + Mango = A Firmer Facade

Want to improve the overall look and strength of your skin? Try consuming this power couple. Eggs are naturally rich in two special amino acids (building blocks of protein) that are essential for the formation of skin-plumping collagen. “And foods rich in vitamin C, like mango, work with these acids to boost collagen production. This helps build back lost stores in the body, which can significantly improve the appearance of skin,” explains Keri Glassman, a registered dietitian in New York City.
Stay-Well Strategy: To give a boost to your next breakfast, pair an omelet with a cup of fresh mango chunks, which supply nearly an entire day’s supply of vitamin C.

Green Tea + Black Pepper = A Whittled Waistline

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/5-green-tea-and-black-pepper.jpg

Forget drastic diets: At your next meal, sip a cup of green tea and shake some black pepper over your entree. “A study recently found that the combo boosts the absorption of EGCG, a key antioxidant in tea tied to calorie burning, by a whopping 130 percent,” explains registered dietitian Cynthia Sass, author of the new book Cinch!: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds, and Lose Inches. Bonus: According to research published in Nutrition Journal, people who drank green tea with their meal reported feeling more full and were less likely to want a second helping than those who drank plain water. Experts say the compounds in green tea can affect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness.
Stay-Well Strategy: Studies say as little as a half-teaspoon of black pepper can increase the absorption of tea’s beneficial compounds.

Radicchio + Kale = A Stronger Skeleton

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/6-kale-and-radiccio.jpg

Cup for cup, kale is the king of calcium (it contains three times more than spinach). However, food scientists say you’ll soak up even more of this bone-building mineral by combining kale with some radicchio. Why? The crimson veggie is a rich source of inulin, a carbohydrate that naturally enhances calcium absorption in the intestines, according to a recent study in the journal Nutrition Research.
Stay-Well Strategy: To shore up your skeleton, toss these tasty greens together in a salad.

Avocado + Green Salad = Complexion Protection

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/7-avocado-green-salad.jpg

You’ll absorb more skin-protecting plant compounds called carotenoids from your veggie salad by adding a little avocado. “Carotenoids reduce free radical damage to effectively protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays,” explains Glassman, a registered dietitian in New York City. In a recent study at Ohio State University, people who ate avocado in their salad of lettuce, spinach, and carrots absorbed up to 15 times more carotenoids than those who didn’t eat their salads with avocado.  Studies show carotenoids require some fat to be optimally absorbed by the body, which means avocados, which contain solid stores of healthful monounsaturated fats, healthfully fit the bill.
Stay-Well Strategy: To nab this nutrition perk, slice a half of an avocado into your next green salad.

Yogurt + Bran Cereal = Better Digestion

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/8-wheat-bran-and-yoghurt.jpg

This breakfast is a natural immunity booster. Full of good bacteria, yogurt acts as a probiotic. It encourages healthy bacteria to flourish in your digestive tract, keeping sickness-causing bugs at bay. But probiotics work even better when paired with the prebiotics found in wheat bran. Why? Prebiotics act as nourishment for probiotics, helping them better thrive in the gut so they can do their immunity-boosting magic, says registered dietitian Dave Grotto, author of the book, 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life.
Stay-Well Strategy: To get in on this good-gut action, first look for probiotic-rich yogurts that sport the label “live and active cultures.”  Then, mix one cup of this yogurt with three quarters of a cup of wheat bran cereal.

Apricots + Almonds = A Tip-Top Ticker

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/9-apricots-and-almonds.jpg

This power pair helps prevents LDL “bad” cholesterol from oxidizing, a process that happens whenever LDL reacts with free radicals. “And oxidized LDL is harmful because it encourages dangerous plaque build-up in the arteries,” explains registered dietitian Elaine Magee, author of the book, Food Synergy. But, in a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, researchers found that the phytochemicals in almonds reduced LDL oxidation when paired with the antioxidant vitamins E and C, both of which are found abundantly in apricots.
Stay-Well Strategy: For a satisfying, heart-healthy snack, combine a quarter-cup each of dried apricots and raw almonds.

Yogurt + Blueberries = A Stronger Body

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/10-yoghurt-and-blueberries.jpg

Spoon up this tasty snack after a sweaty workout. The reason: Research reveals blueberries possess brain-boosting benefits to keep you better focused during your fitness routine, while yogurt’s hefty stores of protein help repair the little tears in your muscles that naturally occur during exercise. As if that's not enough, the carbs in both the yogurt and fruit naturally replenish your muscles with glycogen, a stored form of energy (dipping too low in glycogen can quickly trigger fatigue). Yogurt’s protein also stimulates a hormone that transports those energizing carbs into your muscles to give your next workout more get-up and go.
Stay-Well Strategy: If you’re doing intense exercise and need to be at the top of your game, be especially speedy about eating this recovery snack. Why? Your body’s most efficient at stashing away glycogen in the first 15 minutes after your workout, says Magee.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil + Tomatoes = Disease Defense

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/11-tomatoes-and-olive-oil.jpg

Tomatoes boast all four major carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene) plus three potent antioxidants (beta-carotene, vitamin E, and vitamin C) that may help fight cancer and heart disease. “You’ll absorb more of these protective chemicals if you eat them with olive oil,” says Magee. “It’s high in healthy monounsaturated fats and slows digestion so you can soak up more of them.”
Stay-Well Strategy: Mix a little olive oil in your next marinara. You’ll get a bigger phytochemical punch with cooked tomatoes (leave the skin on, since it’s loaded with them). Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed form, so it contains the most beneficial compounds, says Magee. Just store it away from heat and light to prevent it from going rancid.

Oatmeal + Strawberries = A Healthier Heart

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/12-strawberries-and-oatmeal.jpg

Oats contain two important phytochemicals called avenanthramides and phenolic acids. These compounds have been shown in research to work synergistically with vitamin C to reduce the harmful effects of “bad” LDL cholesterol and help prevent the plaque build-up that can lead to heart attacks, says Magee.
Stay-Well Strategy: Enjoy a half cup of sliced strawberries with your morning bowl of oatmeal.

Cinnamon + Whole Grain Toast = Increased Energy and Speedier Slimming

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/13-cinnamon-and-whole-wheat-toast.jpg

Sprinkling on this spice may help keep your blood sugar at a healthier level, which prevents dips in your energy and spikes in your hunger level, says Sass.  In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cinnamon was found to slow the rate of stomach emptying after meals and reduce the rise in blood sugar after meals to negate more noshing later.
Stay-Well Strategy: For a healthier version of that childhood staple, cinnamon toast, use whole grain bread, trans-free margarine and a study-backed teaspoon of cinnamon. Note: Experts say you’ll nab more protective compounds if your cinnamon is fresh: Whole sticks last up to a year, ground cinnamon for six months.

Garlic + Onions = Head to Toe Protection

http://www.ivstatic.com/files/et/imagecache/636/files/slides/14-garlic-and-onions.jpg

These aromatic veggies both contain a number of organosulfur compounds, heart-healthy plant chemicals that help keep arteries flexible and free of plaque, says Magee. Some of these compounds have even been studied for their power to detoxify carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) in the body. Eating both at the same time means you’re “covering your bases” and boosting your chances of getting more of these healthful compounds, she says.
Stay-Well Strategy: Cooked together, they make a delicious base for soups and sauces or simply sauté veggies like broccoli in a mix of olive oil, garlic, and onions.

Tips To Improve Your Life-By Thomas Ochieng

Honey

http://www.pharmainfo.net/files/u4142/honey.jpg

This ingredient is important because when mixed with hot lemon water, it is the one that will fight off colds, flus and allergies. Plus, it cuts the sourness of the lemon. What you must remember is that you need to get local raw honey, seasonal if possible. The reason for this is the bees themselves providing the natural antigens from season to season. With everyone looking for alternate sweeteners I am always surprised they forget honey. It’s my sweetener of choice with SO many benefits! Add honey to tea and coffee.....

Drink Lemon Water

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSezoXzMqag2QeduIqpkzdENUm0Yc4bOBCoVJNIlhrRinuPIELB

Drinking lemon water is a natural way to lose weight. Lemons help to detoxify the body, cleansing the body of its stores of toxins from food and the environment that may lend to weight gain and water retention. They reduce cholesterol and stimulate the cleansing function of the liver and pancreas.
Although the lemon is often thought of as acidic, it is very effective in curing many digestion problems when mixed with hot water, including biliousness, nausea, heartburn, disorders of the lower intestines like constipation and worm infestations. It is even known to relieve hiccups.
Water plus a few lemons becomes lemon juice. Lemon juice, when taken regularly in the morning, acts as a tonic to the liver and stimulates it to produce bile making it ready to digest the day’s food. It is also thought to help dissolve gallstones. Because of its high vitamin C content, it is thought to help prevent and treat many infections, hasten wound healing and temper down high fever.
Lemon juice also relieves symptoms of asthma, tonsillitis and sore throat.
Lemon is also a diuretic. This means it is good for people with urinary tract infections and high uric acid problems, such as those with arthritis or rheumatism because it helps flush out all the toxins and bad bacteria. When lemon is mixed with coffee, it is thought to help treat malaria. This concoction is also effective for headaches.
Lemon is considered Acidic but it Alkalizes the body which is what the above statements are saying. An alkaline body is an environment where disease cannot find it’s home and lemons are one of the Number one ways of doing this.

Drink Your Milk.

http://blog.ediets.com/uploaded_images/ChocolateMilk-713855.jpg

Think you’re getting a nutritional boost from your morning cereal? Up to 40 percent of the vitamins in fortified cereals dissolve in the milk. If you don’t drink the leftover cow juice, you’re not getting the fancy-pants nutrients!

Ice It, Ace It.

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS5VrrnBfSZSqGLamiWR4u4T9LzTOzrX1JoLRrwfea01dNELBfZ&t=1

Drink a few glasses of ice-cold water before and during exercise. Studies show that the cold stuff can improve endurance by about 23 percent. And ice water forces your body to expend calories warming it up, boosting your metabolism as well.

Lift, Damn It!.

http://www.it-career-coach.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/bootcamp_optimized_448_336.jpg

Verbally expressing emotion while lifting increases muscle strength by up to 25 percent. (Of course, it also increases your risk of being tossed out of the gym by the same percentage . . .) Or get someone to scream at you: You’ll be able to lift 5 to 8 percent more weight if you get verbal encouragement from a trainer or workout partner.

Pick The Red One.

http://www.chemistryland.com/CHM107Lab/Lab1/CabbageStart.jpg

Red cabbage has 15 times as much wrinkle-fighting betacarotene as green cabbage. Red bell peppers have up to nine times as much vitamin C as green ones.

Spear A Hangover

https://www.mediral.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/yoga-for-hangovers.jpg

To reduce the severity of a hangover, order a side of asparagus. When South Korean researchers exposed a group of human liver cells to asparagus extract, the extract suppressed free radicals and more than doubled the effects of two enzymes responsible for metabolizing alcohol.

Don’t Buy Wheat Bread.

http://www.featurepics.com/FI/Thumb300/20090407/Rye-Bread-1144429.jpg

Huh? Isn’t it good for me? Actually, “wheat bread” is often just white bread dyed with molasses to make it look dark. Look instead for “100 percent whole wheat” or “whole grain.” Even better: rye bread. Swedish researchers found that 8 hours after people ate rye, they felt less hungry than those who noshed wheat bread, thanks to rye’s high fiber content.

Listen To Your Feet.

http://cache.heraldinteractive.com/blogs/entertainment/film_junkie/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/serge-running-africa.jpg

If you can hear yourself running, you’re setting yourself up for injury. Pounding the pavement comes from bad form. Keep your feet close to the ground and use a quick, shuffling stride.

Reasons Not To Drink Soda

7 Reasons to Avoid All Soda (Even Diet)

http://www.packtpub.com/sites/default/files/Article-Images/modeling-soda-can-img01.png
The new fad today is 'Diet Soda' that claims to have less amount of sugar. There are studies that show soda is very bad for your health. They claim it causes dental caries, obesity, diabetes, dehydration, lowering of immunity, calcium loss, depletion of minerals, osteoporosis, deprivation of oxygen to the body parts, etc., the list is endless. So what are these soda ingredients that can cause the innumerable health problems and yet we cannot stop ourselves from drinking them? Is it the attractive colors like orange, green, black, brown, pink, etc. that make you have a sip of the artificial taste? Let us learn about the various ingredients of soda to help us answer our doubt.

Ingredients in Soda

Soda ingredients basically comprise of water, sweeteners, an acid and some flavor. The extra or optional ingredients include fruit or fruit juice, carbon dioxide, preservatives and color. 86% of carbonated drink or soda comprises of water. The sugar added to soda is mostly sucrose that is made up of two simple sugars, fructose and glucose. This sugar provides about 17kJ/g of energy to the body. There are many other artificial sweeteners added like aspartame. This aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, so the manufactures add very little of it to the soda.

The natural flavors added are derived from fruits, vegetables, nuts, leaves, herbs, spices, etc. The sodas that are added with natural ingredients require preservatives to prevent spoilage. The artificial flavor added can give you many choices and flavors. There are many artificial flavors that mimic natural flavors very well.

But that innocent-looking can of soda pop, no matter what it’s sweetened with, may be taking a toll on your immunity. Here’s why:

1. The preservatives added like citric acid and phosphoric acids help not only in preventing spoilage, but giving a distinct tartness or bite to the drink. If there is too much citric acid or phosphoric acid in the blood, you will need calcium to help normalize the pH of the blood. The calcium is leached from the bones that leads to osteoporosis. Thus, many teenagers complain of weak bones due to excessive soda drinking. Therefore, people who drink sodas instead of healthy beverages (think low-fat milk and pure fruit juice) are less likely to get adequate vitamin A, calcium, and magnesium. The phosphoric acid contained in soda depletes calcium and magnesium. These two nutrients help keep your immunity operating at peak efficiency.

2. Sodas containing high-fructose corn syrup also contain high levels of free radicals linked to tissue damage, the development of diabetes, and diabetic complications.

3. Sodium benzoate (E211) is a preservative in carbonated drinks (carbonic acid). Professor Peter W Piper of the University of Sheffield claims that sodium benzoate by itself can damage and inactivate vital parts of DNA in a cell's mitochondria. Mitochondria consume oxygen to generate ATP, the body's energy currency. If they are damaged due to disease, the cell malfunctions and may enter apoptosis. There are many illnesses now tied to DNA damage, including Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases, but above all, the aging process in general.

4. Plastic soda (and water) bottles contain a toxic chemical called bisphenol A (BPA) that can leach from bottles into soda…into you. Emerging evidence links BPA to a myriad of maladies, including immune system depression. Public health experts recommend that we protect children from exposure to products containing BPA-especially those they consume or use every day.

http://mycanceradvisor.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/soft_drinks.jpg

5. Diet soda actually contributes to weight gain. A study of 1,550 people concluded that people who drink diet soda have a 41 percent increased risk of being overweight or obese-for every can or bottle they drink per day! Turns out, any sweet taste signals body cells to store fat and carbohydrates, which makes you hungrier. Sweet tastes also promote insulin release, which blocks your body’s ability to burn fat. The hard truth: No published study has ever proven that drinking diet soda will help you lose weight.

6. Caffeine is an age-old ingredient of soda which is nothing but extracted cola leaf and cola nut. Excessive caffeine in the body can cause dehydration of the body. It will also lead to large scale depletion of minerals from the body. The bubbly appeal of soda drinks is due to carbon dioxide. The process called carbonation that occurs under pressure and chilled temperatures helps adding the bubbles to the soft drink. This makes the drink refreshing and adds the zing in soda. The carbonated water ingested with every soda bottle decreases the oxygen in blood by 25% for up to 3 hours.

7. Hyperactivity.
Research published in 2007 for the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) suggests that certain artificial colours, when paired with sodium benzoate (E211) may be linked to hyperactive behaviour. The results were inconsistent regarding sodium benzoate, so the FSA recommended further study.
Professor Jim Stevenson from Southampton University, and author of the report, said: "This has been a major study investigating an important area of research. The results suggest that consumption of certain mixtures of artificial food colours and sodium benzoate preservative are associated with increases in hyperactive behaviour in children. However, parents should not think that simply taking these additives out of food will prevent hyperactive disorders. We know that many other influences are at work but this at least is one a child can avoid."

In response to consumer insistence on a more natural product and E211's links to DNA damage and ADHD, the Coca Cola Company is in the process of phasing Sodium Benzoate out of Diet Coke. The company has stated that it plans to remove E211 from its other products — including Sprite, Fanta, and Oasis — as soon as a satisfactory alternative is discovered.

BENEFITS OF FIBER

Could Getting More Fiber Help You Live Longer?

Hear fiber and you probably think of bran cereal, which doesn’t exactly make you salivate. But new research suggests more fiber could equal more years. Analyzing data from nearly 400,000 men and women ages 50 to 71, researchers found that those who consumed the most fiber were 22 percent less likely to die from any cause during the nine years they were studied. Men were 24 to 56 percent and women 34 to 59 percent less likely to die of heart and infectious or respiratory diseases, according to findings from the National Institutes of Health's AARP Diet and Health Study, published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Why fiber reduces the risk of early death is unclear. Perhaps it's because fiber lowers levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol, improves blood glucose levels, reduces inflammation, and binds to potential cancer-causing agents, helping to flush them out of the body, says lead author Yikyung Park, a staff scientist at the National Cancer Institute.
What is clear, however, is that participants only benefited when fiber came from grains, like oatmeal, cornmeal, and brown rice.

http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/IMAGES/Wisconsin/sweet-corn-on-cob.jpg

Fiber from fruits, vegetables, and beans had no impact on death risk. "Whole grains are rich sources of fiber, but also good sources of vitamins, minerals, and other phytochemicals that may provide health benefits," Park says. And grains have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties--another reason researchers say grain fiber is beneficial.
Clearly, "all fibers are not created equal," cautions James Anderson, an endocrinologist at the University of Kentucky-Lexington. "Different fibers have different properties." And while the latest study emphasizes grain fiber, past studies have found that fiber from fruits and vegetables can benefit heart health.
Here's a field guide to fiber sources:

Soluble fiber:

http://www.whyguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/strawberries1.jpg

Foods high in soluble fiber, so called because of its ability to dissolve readily in liquids--include oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, rice bran, barley, citrus fruits, strawberries, and apple pulp, according to the American Heart Association. Soluble fibers have been linked to lower levels of "bad" cholesterol. Viscous fibers found in foods like oat bran and beans seem to work particularly well because they form a gel in the gut that slows down fat formation and absorption, says Joanne Slavin, a professor of food science and nutrition at the University of Minnesota and author of the American Dietetic Association's 2008 position paper on dietary fiber. (The Food and Drug Administration allows heart disease health claims for oats, barley, and psyllium, the fiber found in Metamucil.) Soluble fibers also regulate blood glucose levels, says Anderson. But most soluble fibers, except psyllium, don't have the laxative effects that many people associate with fiber, so don't rely on them for that purpose.

Insoluble fiber:

http://www.seriouseats.com/images/20080903-inseasonbeets.jpg
High levels of insoluble fiber, too, have been associated with a lower risk of heart disease--perhaps through other mechanisms. So while there's an ongoing debate over which types of fiber confer which heart-protective benefits, the take-home is that no one should rely solely on soluble fibers to get the maximal heart benefit.

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSXO_SHT35ylOv5pUkaqNAjRQtqFbpqZ0-nea9Kj-pat2r7r96B

The AHA lists whole-wheat breads, wheat cereals, wheat bran, cabbage, beets, carrots, brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, and apple skin as foods high in this type of fiber. Unlike soluble fiber, it doesn't dissolve in liquids or form a gel but instead passes through the digestive tract pretty much unchanged. Because insoluble fiber hustles things along in the digestive tract, it's also a good source of relief if you're constipated. In addition, insoluble fiber (and to some extent, the soluble kind) may help you feel fuller and possibly help weight control.

Resistant starch and others:

http://www.pandaexpress.com/images/menuFriedRice.jpg

The starch products not digested in the small intestine "fit the newer definitions of fiber," says Slavin. They're found in legumes as well as starches like potatoes, pasta, and rice that have been cooked and cooled (as in potato or pasta salad, or sushi), and barely ripe bananas. And they're also being added to foods to increase fiber content without affecting taste, as well as to reduce caloric density; a product called Hi-maize, for example, is added to pastas and energy bars. In addition, resistant starch is a "prebiotic" that, when fermented in the large intestine, increases beneficial bacteria, says Hope Warshaw, a nutritionist and author of the Real-Life Guide to Diabetes. (She's also a consultant to National Starch, the maker of Hi-maize.) It doesn't, however, seem to have the cardiovascular effects of other soluble fibers, says Anderson.
Yogurts with added fiber actually contain inulin, a group of simple sugars that are not digested. Inulin occurs naturally in chicory root and other plants and grains and is a form of soluble fiber but, like resistant starches, doesn't have the same anticholesterol effects, says Slavin. It, too, has prebiotic effects.

So what's the bottom line?

http://www.kosherica.com/passover-hotels/images/Fruit.jpg

The federal government's just-released Dietary Guidelines for Americans call for about 25 grams of daily fiber for women and 38 for men, and research shows we are getting only about 15 grams. But because the health benefits of different types of fiber vary--and in many cases are not clear or consistent--the best advice is to eat an array of plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. That's despite the new findings that only fiber from grains is linked to a lower risk of early death.

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS9hWyEteACeRgdM-yaSsfYkpsH3ASydddPYt4rEft_8rXovI2gQQ

Worry less about targeting specific types of fiber and "get [it] from as many different foods as you can," advises Slavin. And if you are selecting packaged foods on the basis of their fiber content, be sure that they are healthful in and of themselves. Cracklin' Oat Bran, for example, has 6 grams of fiber per serving, but 30 percent of its calories come from sugar and it has 3 grams of saturated fat.

The secret ingredient in my salad-By Thomas O. Ochieng

Let's Talk Valentines'....Shall We?.......

Now that Valentines Day is here, many people are trying to figure out the best way to please their partners. Buying chocolate, sweet red wines, eating oysters(zinc), peanuts, and the list goes on and on and on......
So today I want to share with you a secret ingredient in my salad, an ingredient that may change the level of play for you, from low to very high. An ingredient that is key to my daily lifestyle....one that really matters a lot.....
You see, many people always ask me what I eat in my salads, just to try and get an idea of how many things are in the salads and how many calories I eat. What they never understand is why one vegetable is a must in my salad. And today I explain why.

Androstenone is a steroid found in both male and female sweat and urine. It is also found in boar's saliva, and in celery cytoplasm. Androstenone was the first mammalian pheromone to be identified. It is found in high concentrations in the saliva of male pigs, and, when sniffed by a female pig that is in heat, results in the female's assuming the mating stance.

In animals, sex pheromones indicate the availability of the female for breeding. Male animals may also emit pheromones that convey information about their species and genotype.

At the microscopic level, male copepods can follow a three-dimensional pheromone trail left by a swimming female, and male gametes of many animals use a pheromone to help find a female gamete, for fertilization.
Many insect species release sex pheromones to attract a mate, and many lepidopterans (moths and butterflies) can detect a potential mate from as far away as 10 kilometers (6.25 miles). Traps containing pheromones are used by farmers to detect and monitor insect populations in orchards.
Pheromones are also used in the detection of oestrus in sows. Boar pheromones are sprayed into the sty, and those sows that exhibit sexual arousal are known to be currently available for breeding. Sea urchins release pheromones into the surrounding water, sending a chemical message that triggers other urchins in the colony to eject their sex cells simultaneously.
Feel free to dig deeper into pheromones to understand what they are.

Let's talk celery cytoplasm.....you know celery, right?

http://www.hyscience.com/200%20calories%20of%20celery.png

Celery may just put the “crude” in “crudite." Research has found that sharing a stalk of it can make you and your partner mutually irresistible. That's thanks to androstenone, a steroid found in human sweat that puts off a scent, or sex pheromone, which makes people more attractive to each other. This steroid is also found in celery and eating it can increase the human levels of the steroid and pheromone secretion! “In addition, celery increases the volume of ejaculatory fluids in both sexes making climax stronger so not only will a man smell good, he will have a stronger urge to have sex,” says Judy Gaman, co-author of Stay Young: Ten Proven Steps to Ultimate Health. “For women, it can put her in a great mood and increase the orgasmic effect.”

So, as soon as you finish the wine section, head to the vegetable section, and have a lovely Valentines Day every day......

The 10 best workouts for your sex life-By Sarah Klein

It's no secret that exercise boosts your mood, jump-starts your sex drive, and improves your overall health. But that still doesn't always get you to the gym.

So what could be better than a workout that takes your mind off the fact that you're working hard to burn those calories?

"Sexy workouts help us tune into our bodies in a sensual way, so we feel more receptive and more interested in sex," says Marianne Brandon, PhD, a clinical psychologist and sex therapist in Annapolis, Md.

Apart from doing the deed itself, these 10 exercises are the sexiest ways to break a sweat. They'll get your heart racing—in more ways than one!

Pole dancing

http://img2.timeinc.net/health/images/gallery/living/pole-dance-400x400.jpg
No longer just for exotic dancers, pole-dancing classes have sprung up around the country—and appear to be here to stay. Private studios and nationwide gym chains alike offer lessons, no experience necessary.

For women with flagging libidos, it can even act as treatment. "I often recommend this with my patients as homework," says Brandon.

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSEJKypNy8wN8ZmyuWVC2SRVvsFqcUFBBsFNZH16_wPIPJDq0fAPA
Just don't expect it to be a walk in the park! Sessions can involve hours of strength work (how else do you stay on the thing if not for clenched muscles?) and sultry swiveling to upbeat tunes.

Salsa lessons

http://www.dancesportsuperbowl.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/salsa1.jpg

Hit the dance floor for steamy salsa lessons and burn 200 calories in half an hour. You don't need to be a great dancer—classes across the country are full of people of all backgrounds and levels. Plus, a workout where you get to don a flirty dress and racy heels can't be bad!

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS4apYe0fCnJN_gZb1l_gEKAdcKw1_vP2onLmAh-2qTU9vq-Tmtsg
To really stoke the flame, grab your significant other and take a lesson as a couple. Studies show partners who try something new together reap big benefits both in and out of bed!

Strip aerobics (cardio striptease)

http://www.seattlepi.com/dayart/20030211/226stripXX_instructor.jpg
You don't have to look like Carmen Electra to test-drive her striptease-as-cardio workout plan. And don't worry—you don't actually take all your clothes off!

This class is more about sexy, stripper-like moves than disrobing—although you can feel free to peel off a sweatshirt or T-shirt, if you want to.

While strip aerobics could still seem intimidating, devotees stress it's fun and sexy at any size or shape. Join a class where a choreographer can help you learn the steps, or slide into some fishnets and pop in a DVD at home—with or without an audience!

Chair dancing

Chair-dancing workout DVDs seem to have been predominantly relegated to late-night infomercials. But there's a fitness gem buried even in this risqué routine. Gyrating and jiggling is highly encouraged—and the result is tight abs, legs, butts, and more.

Many private studios are beginning to incorporate these moves into their pole-dancing or other sultry dance classes.

"I tell [patients] they can then use those skills with their partner at home; they can give it as a gift on Valentine's Day," says Brandon, author of Monogamy: The Untold Story and co-author of Reclaiming Desire: 4 Keys to Finding Your Lost Libido.

Belly dancing

We love the message of this Middle Eastern dancercise: Love your body no matter what.

So slip into a slinky hip wrap and shake what you've got to the lively Arabic music. Many major health clubs offer classes that can melt up to 350 calories in an hour!

Plus, for someone who's not quite comfortable swinging around a pole, this can be a more modest way to get into sexy exercising, says Brandon.

Naked yoga

Not everyone will warm to the idea of a disrobed Downward Facing Dog. Still, naked yoga studios have popped up around the country.

Fans say losing their clothes makes the relaxing and calming practice even better, allowing them to really celebrate their bodies.

"The more you get to thinking about sex, the more you're going to want to have it," says Brandon. "Sexy workouts set positive expectations and help you feel more tuned into your body."

"Plus, many yoga poses—done with or without clothes—open up the hips, thighs, and pelvis, and strengthen key pelvic-floor muscles for deeper and better orgasms", says Thomas Ochieng, master trainer and personal trainer at Equinox, Bethesda, Md

Zumba

Literally translated to mean "move fast," this Colombian dance craze has swept fitness groups across six continents! It's a mile-a-minute mix of traditional aerobic moves for maximum heart pumping, sassy Latin shimmies, and hip-hop-inspired booty shaking.

Best of all, you don't have to be a pro to join in the party. New participants are encouraged to hang in at their own pace, picking up the moves as they go along.
"It's not a place of competition, like you [might] expect," says Brandon. "It's very supportive for women."

Bollywood Dance

Indian-inspired Bollywood dance is also making a sexy splash. A half hour burns about 200 calories, and many of the dances tell stories of romance or lost love, so really get into the part!

If your gym doesn't offer Bollywood or Bhangra classes, there are lots of at-home options. We like Hemalayaa: Bollywood Booty for its four backside-shaping routines.

Aerial acrobatics

Popularized by circus acrobats, this workout is slowly moving mainstream. It will definitely take some practice, but learning to slink among bolts of fabric hanging from the ceiling—stretching and strengthening, all while defying gravity—is sure to take your breath away.

Some private studios are now incorporating different types of antigravity movements into their classes, including yoga in midair!

You'll notice more than just the inches you lose when it comes to looking in the mirror. "It makes us feel better about our body image," says Brandon, "and that will lead us to be more interested in physical and sensual activity."
